The Livingston gun show is this weekend, I went early Friday with a couple friends and when I got there, I was told about a Winchester low wall that was stamped “W.F. Sheard, Livingston, Montana.” I looked at it and it is an original half round half octagon in 22 Long. Not many of those around and the bore is shiney, so I bought it. Gophers are only a month away from seeing the wrong end of the Winchester…
Very nice, good find!

The same WF Sheard who once operated out of Tacoma, Wa? An uncommon name, so I would presume so. Other sight makers also sold guns out of a retail shop, such as Lyman & Pacific. But does it also have a Sheard front sight? Can’t tell from photo.
Maybe you know already, but some Long chambers will accept Long Rifle…in which case you have a much expanded choice of ammo.

Yes, it is the same W.F. Sheard who moved from Livingston, MT to Tacoma, WA. Over the years, I have encountered a few high-walls and Model 1886 rifles with the same marking on the barrel. Oddly, when he moved to Tacoma, he place his marking on the left side of the receiver frames versus on the barrel.
At the time the subject rifle was shipped to Sheard, he had not yet invented & patented his front sights.

Please send me the serial number on your new low-wall so that I can determine if it was a single rifle order, or others were with it.Bert
Bert,
The serial number is 62707, it appears to be a late 1892 gun. Sheard moved from Livingston to Tacoma in 1892-1893, this rifle could have been shipped to him from Winchester. Sheard did handle quite a few used guns as well.
I also have 3 other Sheard marked guns, a 1876 Winchester in 45-75. a Marlin 1889 in 44-40 and a Winchester 1886 in 40-65…
