i am trying to find out what the barrel would measure at the receiver for a Winchester 1894 in 38-55 with a 28″ octagon  barrel. And also has anyone seen an EHB that was proud to the receiver by about .020

I don’t believe that Winchester ever made an “extra heavy” barrel for the Model 1894, and certainly not one that stood proud of the receiver frame ring. If the serial number is < 354000, you should contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office and obtain a factory letter.

That does not mean that it is authentic.

If the corners of the barrel stick out beyond the receiver it means Winchester didn’t put it together.

Renneberg’s book states sn 15266 letters as a deluxe, pg checkered model with an extra heavy round barrel.   He eludes that this is one of two EH’s listings known.

Rapid taper, standard taper, extra heavy. All 45 caliber.

I have a 73 heavy octagon barrel.  I know the muzzle od measures exactly 1″, I have never measured the flats.

Old1892

It measures 1.039″ and 1.004″

86 John Madl’s website has some approximate measurements on 86’s Heavy’s and EH’s he has sampled over the years.  John also told me his sampling shows heavy barrels vary in dimension more than standards weights.
