Before Oliver Winchester settled on the Nelson King design improvements on the Henry rifle for the new Model 1866 rifle, he also considered the competing design improvements from George Briggs.
Winchester had this experimental Briggs rifle engraved and presented back to him, and it was passed through his family before entering a private collection in the mid-20th century.
