My 1886 was missing the rear sight elevator when I acquired it. I purchased a reproduction replacement but cant seem to install it. Does the rear sight have to be removed for the elevator to be installed? Go easy on me I’m a rookie.

The elevator piece should slip in by lifting up on the buckear part of the rear sight. Some reproduction elevator pieces may be slightly to thick to fit into the elongated slot in the rear sight. You most definitely do not need to remove the rear sight.

I know about the different elevator widths and the one I have is slipping in OK. I have the standard buckhorn, sight 22B per the Madis book and the elevator 1B per same book. I guess it just is what it is. There are 6 steps but the slot on the buckhorn is realistically only letting me use 2 of the notches to change the elevation. Thanks for your input Michael. One thing though I just noticed, mine is a 40-82 and the Madis book notes the sights on this caliber were the 22A sight. The flat top sight. Still shouldnt make any difference thought to the elevator !!
Thx again
