Bubba 84,

You did not read accurate information… there were a fair number of Model 1894s made in the year 1894 that were second models.  First models were predominant in the first 3,000 or so Model 1894s made, and were nearly exclusive to those made for the 38-55 cartridge.  The 1st second model discovered thus far was serial number 543.

Per the survey conducted by the Cody Firearms Museum and published in the ARMAX Vol V, serial number 838 was the first nickel plated Model 1894.

Bert was wondering if i should have this professionally refinished ,the wood is in great shape with most all of its high gloss finish intact but the nickle is in need of repair on receiver and lever or would this ruin any value i have thanks in advance

You would ruin the collector value. I do not know anyone who can duplicate the original Winchester nickel plating correctly.

Did you notice that s/n 838 is listed as passing thru the warehouse on 1-15-94. I’m guessing this is a typo and should be 1-15-95 since the earliest ’94s are in Oct. 1894, correct? Anyway, any nickel plated 1894 is quite a rare find, especially the first one…….very cool rifle to own.

Bubba

Do you have a letter on this rifle? Just curious what the dates read.

Bubba,

Would you mind if Bert posted the pictures? We would sure like to see your early, nickel plated 1894.

Gary, i hope you will not be disappointed

it is not as pretty as some i have seen on here but it is honest wear for an old barn gun                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  regards                                                                                                                                                                                                        bubba

Wow, very nice and appears unmolested.  DO NOT refinish it!

While not perfect it shows honest wear and age on a very desirable configuration and low serial number.

Thanks for sharing the photos (and thanks to Bert for posting them).
