Good afternoon all,
I have had this rifle for some time and it has always been a bit of an enigma. Serial number is 1001, cal .30 U.S., barrel is 24″(cut down) it’s really just a standard rifle.
I believe it should have a flat side receiver and one peice lever, clearly it does not.
I would assume that it may have had the original receiver damaged and this one fitted in its place but there is no mention of that in its letter from the Cody Museum.
Has anyone seen this early of a scalloped side receiver?
Any thoughts or or insight would be appreciated.
Sadly, it has had the barrel cut down, tang drilled and a sling mounted at some point. It was a good price at a pawn shop, so I’m not too upset.
Hi Nikko
Yes, I believe the earliest second model receiver we’ve seen in what is normally the first model range is serial number 84. We received some photos of it and mentioned that rifle on page 49 of the Model 1895 book. Its warehouse dates are later compared to your rifle however.
We also noted on page 49 (serial number 789) of the book that we began finding “new system” rifle entries in the fall and winter of 1897-1898, corresponding with your rifle’s warehouse entry. I hope that helps.

Thank you for the information Brad, it really does help.
I have most of the Madis books, so my resources are limited and dated. I’ve been looking to get a copy of the Model 1895 book for years but they are certainly limited in availability and therfore affordability.
Are there any future plans for another printing? Also do you suggest any other reference books?
Nikko
