It’s my opinion that this carbine has been refinished. No saddle ring wear and the markings, especially the proof marks look re-stamped or engraved. Compare the proof marks to other Winchesters and there’s an obvious difference.

Yes, they look funky to me. I agree, it looks like the receiver proof has been chased with a graver.

That receiver has been re-blued in my opinion. Just too pristine, and as Don has pointed out, no saddle ring wear at all.

Barrel and receiver are refinished and re-proofed as well. One of the Ray Bentley guns from Julia. I am disappointed Merz is selling it like that. He knows what it is.

A prominent and respected member of the antique firearms community told me after Ray Bentley”s passing that Ray didn’t like anything that wasn’t 100%, but when he acquired much (most?) of his stuff, it wasn’t nearly so pristine. Caveat emptor!
