Rock Island just posted their May online auction catalog. I’ve been looking and some of the guns seem to have very low estimate including guns belonging  to a late friend of mine. I know the guns first hand, so I’m thinking maybe this is bate to encourage auction attendance. I was with him when he bought the guns and I would hope they haven’t dropped that much in value. T/R

Combination of both.  No way around it–collectible Winchesters have dropped in value, even if with special order features and condition.  Also, everyone likes a bargain, so that can spur interest.

I think RIA’s approach with stuff that continues to escalate is to value high in the hope that prices continue to go ever higher.  For example, Registered Magnums in the last auction had estimates that were healthy despite their recent rise.  Few, if any, touched the low end estimate.

I’ve seen a few guns that sold in a recent RIA and they sold for less than I felt they should have. Perhaps RIA is basing their estimates on recent auction results…which would be a realistic approach. It sucks to be a seller in a buyers’ market.

Right!  And it’s a buyer’s market for antique Winchester lever actions (but still a seller’s market for registered magnums).

If it gets to sucking TOO badly, they can always get a real job.

I had to get a real job partly because I was buying so many Winchesters!

I’m looking at nice Winchesters, not minty and not brown but betweener’s and May’s catalog estimates seem low, if they sell at those prices I’m a happy buyer. I agree it’s a buyers market and if these guns sell for a realistic price I’m back to attending auctions. That said, I have to like what I buy because I can’t afford to sell in a buyers market at an auction. Mike said it best “It sucks to be a seller in a buyer’s market.”  T/R
