I am trying to compile a list of books that are MUST haves and Good to haves. so your input would be spectacular. I am mainly intrested in 86′,92′,94′, and 95’s. so far my list is the winchester book the pirkle books for each model, and the winchester catalog mainly because it claims to have somewhat of a picture guide for condition grading. I did read that gun of the old west did have one really good chapter on lever guns. I like books and would like to know what else ya’ll consider to be good informative reads.

For 94’s I would suggest the ” Winchester Model 94, A Century of Craftsmanship” by Robert Renneberg

For 86 information check out John Madl at this link: http://www.lssu.edu/faculty/jmadl/

He does have a book too but I have never looked at it.

I’ve recently acquired the below and have found all very helpful/educational:

The Winchester Book by Madis (large Madis book)

The Winchester Handbook by Madis (much of the same info as above, but a pocket sized book)

Winchester an American Legend by RL Wilson

I’ve got a copy of One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes by Ray Giles & Dan Shuey on the way.

Hello Patrick,

I am compiling a survey of the Model 1892 rifles and will be glad to answer any specific questions you might have regarding them.  Sadly the information in the Madis book is woefully incomplete and in some instances inaccurate.  The rarity numbers are no where near correct and the SN ranges for transitions from one manufacturing style to another are not right.  Pirkle parroted much of the Madis information so it is not much help either.

I have very much enjoyed Clyde Williamson’s The Winchester Lever Legacy. I like his ‘down home’ style of writing. I would not recommend his loads, however. They look pretty steamy to me.

I also like reading Clyde Williamson’s book.  A different Williamson, Harold, wrote an excellent book that is not so much about individual models in detail as it is an excellent overall history of Winchester.  Winchester: The Gun That Won the West is very good and should be available on amazon or maybe even as an ebook somewhere.
