Chuck,
Early guns they plugged and finished over and later guns the put the filler screws in them. I have a 66 rifle that has the flush plugs.

Did they ever issue the rifle with the ring?
Yes they did but very rarely.

Was that a special order thing, or did they put some out that way, or both? And in either case, do they letter with the ring? Thanks.
I’ve said it before: I like a saddle ring just, well, because.
Huck,
It was special order only as far as I have seen.

Chuck,
The saddle rings on the rifles were called “Sling Ring” in the records. The most common combination was a 44 caliber, 24″ round barrel with a carbine stock and the sling ring. The fanciest one I’ve found was a 44 with a 22″ half round barrel, set trigger, half mag, pistol grip, checkered, case colored, shotgun butt with it 1/2″ shorter, graduated peep, beach front with the sling ring.

I echo Chuck. Thanks for the education.
