I’d like to share with you Winchester collectors some pics of a rifle a packrat friend of mine came across last week. He told me he’d run into a lady during his travels that wanted to sell “grandpa’s shotgun”. It turned out to be a model 1885 with an AO Niedner barrel! Serial # dates the receiver to 1910. At present, I don’t know if it was a Winchester takedown simply rebarreled, or a regular 1885 that Niedner made into a takedown himself. There’s no interrupted thread on the barrel and I didn’t think to look in the receiver. No markings as to chambering, but the .298″ chamber and .358″ tell me it either a 22 Hornet or Niedner’s blown out version. The barrel is 28″ long, and .797 in diameter at the muzzle. It has a single set trigger. The scope is a J. Stevens #141, 24.25″ long. I can tell it has been sitting in the corner of someone’s room a very long time. The objective end of the scope is full of dust, so is the barrel at the muzzle end, but it is clean further back. Well, I don’t see how one put’s up images here, perhaps guests can’t. But, you can see it at this link: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?349699-AO-Niedner-barreled-1885-Winchester-Takedown
