I first saw this Model 1892 sporting rifle in the Amoskeag June 2018 auction as Lot #171.  It sold for $1092.  Then it was listed on Gunbroker buy a seller out of Uniontown, PA.  Then listed on GB by a seller out of Akron, IA where it sold for $1580.  Now it pops up in Guns International being sold by Billy someplace here in Texas for $4750!!!  The poor rifle just can’t find a good home with loving parents.  Up for sale 4 times within 7 months!!     https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/winchester-rifles-model-1892/antique-4-digit-winchester-1892.cfm?gun_id=101163964

I can see why it keeps going up for sale. It’s making money for someone every time. It’s like buying stock. It’s made over 3500 in 7 months! Impressive!

Joe45c,

You may be calculating chickens before they hatch!  Regretfully I do not know what the rifle sold for the first time it was on GB.  So I do not really know if the Akron IA sale made money.  And right now it is just offered $4750!   It still has a long way to go before it sells.  The Akron, IA seller does a pretty good job of buying from the large auction houses and then reselling.  He pretty much consistently make money.  But one would think that he also “tested the market” for what the rifle is valued at.  It is a gutsy move to then buy from him and mark it up substantially and think it will sell at that price.  That also leaves LOTS of room to give the next buyer a real deal at let’s say $3000 and still do well.  Lots of ways to skin a cat.

I’ve seen a gun at a show sell 3 time in one show. Each dealer knowing someone else that is looking for that kind of gun, each time the gun changed hands they made money.

I posted this because it is fairly obvious to the trained eye that you can see the alteration in the green background photos from Leroy’s site.  BUT you would be hard pressed to see anything in the RIA photo and there is NO mention of the alteration in the RIA description.

Funny how someone with a “95% blue” gun would dress it in such poor wood.

Crazy!  A four fold difference in perceived value!!  We will never know why someone may see it so differently.

Mike,

I agree that the rifle is above average and fairly early production.  But nothing spectacular.   My wonder is where was this buyer within the past month or so when the rifle was for sale out of Akron, IA  and sold for 1/3 of the price?  I know we will never know that answer.
