A friend passed away and his son asked me to clean and refinish his dads old 88 in 308 and of course I will do my best, I watched a video and the person that took one apart said NOT to take the metal part on the stock that the receiver hooks in off, can someone here tell me why? I need to take it off to refinish the stock.

I don’t know what the gun looks like but if it’s in even just fair condition, I’d advise him to clean it up and leave the original finish.

I would agree with leaving the original finish. Especially, if it’s a passed down family heirloom. I enjoy the history and the "been there, done that" look of a completely original rifle. To me, those that are refinished, it erases the history and all the good times and good hunts that rifle endured all of its life. It would be a shame to "erase" all those memories, especially if you were there to witness them with those who are now gone. Just my 2 cents…

1 reason I would think the guy said not to take the receiver recoil block out is that if it’s not tight enough when put back in it can cause the stock to crack and the M88’s as well as the 100’s are prone to cracking at the block as the wrist is the weak point on both models.Another reason is if you slip with the screw driver loosening or tightening the block bolt inside the stock you can very easily crack the stock from the side pressure of the screwdriver against the side walls of the stock.I’ve been collecting both the 88 and 100’s for over 30 yrs and have taken many apart and never a prob but also being very carefull !

After seeing the 88 I am going to refinish the stock, the original finish is about %70 gone, lots of bare wood.
Thanks for all the info but the original stock finish is mostly gone.
