Or markings. I mean no stamps anywhere.

No, it is not a Rossi. The metal and wood are quite old.

A guy wants to sell me this gun (it’s in 44/40) but I am not sure I want to buy it.

But, have any of you ever heard of a 92 with no markings?

Googling I found one post on another site talking about some retail companies buying Winchester to sell at their stores without such markings.

Any one know if this is true?

Thanks,

Deaf

DS,

My guess would be that the rifle has been refinished and that the metal was overly polished/buffed to get rid of rust prior to rebluing. It has no collector value and little shooter value to most folks. Is there a folding peep sight on the upper tang covering the Model designation?

Hmm how do I attach pictures?

Or maybe I’m just to new here to be allowed to?

I don’t see any function for doing that.

There is a fairly good chance that the rifle in question is a copy of
the Model 92.

My vote goes to Spanish copy of a 92, known as "El Tigre".

Hello Deaf,

The rifle is indeed a real Winchester but it has been buffed to death and the stamped writing that was originally on the rifle is now gone. You can tell the extent of the buffing by how much the screw holes on the receiver are dished out. In addition the wood has been overly sanded and fits poorly. There is now no way to determine the possible manufacture date.

Ok, it has a 26 inch barrel (it is LONG.)

I thought maybe El Tigere but the websites show only a 23 inch barrel, and this one is longer.

More research!

Say, was the Serial Number stamped UNDER the barrel? If so, maybe I can check that.

Also the local crime lab guys I know have this acid that will many times raise up the serial numbers.

Thanks,

Deaf

Deaf,

26 inch barrels were manufactured by Winchester and are not uncommon to find on Model 1892 rifles. There is no SN stamped under the barrel so you don’t need to look there.

I’d say that Winchester began the practice of stamping the two digit year on the underside of their barrels in 1921. I have seen several examples of the 21 (1921) and 22 (1922) dates.

Local guy had a model 63 with no markings. Gun was in the white and he thought it was a lunch box special. Had lots of patina and poorly fitted parts. He gave it to a local police chief.
