I picked up a 73 and under the forend where the barrel screws into receiver there’s the #’s 77 which I know is the year it was made but in front of that there are 3 +’s ?.Does anyone know what these + marks mean ?.The serial # is just below 20,000 so I know it was made in 1877
Thanks, Ed
Ed,
The +++ is a barrel inspection or test marking. First they marked them CCC, then +++ and finally 123 was used. I have never seen a 73 barrel marked with a year code like the later model guns

I would agree with this statement. And a SN of just under 20,000 is from production during 1876 (as per data listed in Redbook) so that does not correlate.

88-man,
Did you letter the gun yet? I was just wondering about the 77 if that correlates to the year. I did look through some old letters I have and found a 20425 serial number that letters entered into the warehouse 8/78.
