OfflineThere is a reason I don’t try drugs – I have an addictive personality and afraid I would like them. My interest is all over the place and I can get in the current groove very easily. Almost everything outdoors, except for ball sports, I like ball sports, the players are just a bit to whiney or thuggery for me, they ruined it. Well, except when my grandson is playing, then I like to watch
. I like woodworking and 60’s and early 70’s cars.

Hello, I’m looking for help valuing an antique Winchester 1892 rifle. 38 WCF serial number 3807. It has all the markings of an original and has been in my family since purchased new in 1892. Any information would be appreciated.
Go to the Forum tab and then select Forum Rules and Facts. Then how to post pictures. We need to see some pictures to be able to help you.

OfflineWelcome ColtMan!
“WinchesterMan” might be more appropriate for this forum but you are welcome here nonetheless. The Colt was a great tool to hold off the hoards until you could get to your Winchester 😉
Best Regards,

OfflineNew member with new 1886, long time reader of this great fourm. Long time fan of the lever gun. Been around firearms my whole life. Dad bought me my first rifle when I was 7 in 1978, a marlin 336. I still have it. Got my first Winchester when I was 15, model 70 30-06, still have it. So I have all the latest black stuff, a few nice old colts, some nice s & w’s. And now my interest is antique. Bought my first rifle on a auction site and it arrived yesterday. A high 4 digit 1886 chambered in 45-90. First rifle purchased without actual handling and looking over it. This was a lot of money for me. I have to say it seems like a nice piece for the price range. It for sure has a older redfield front site that I’m pretty sure was not factory installed. Possibly a older, like 40 or 50 years ago barrel reblue but not sure. Sorry if I’m posting this wrong, first time trying. ![]()

OfflineYes sir. What I know. Rifle was advertised as original blue. Front sight replaced at some point with redfield sight. I’m still learning but, on one hand it does look original finish. Tried the flash light trick on barrel and it does show some rust, brown reddish color. But faint. Looks like at some point the rear sight was knocked, not sure if it was removed or adjusted for windage. The flat of barrel muzzle could have minor blue. Or maybe old black powder burn? The magazine tube has aged differently from barrel more patina. Stocks seem like good fit, everything is tight and good mechanics. Roll marks look pretty good and appear to have not been blued over. S/N 8855. I tried to post pics but bad light and bad photographer. Bore very good and shinny. Bye the way I love your research on the 94s. Got my eye on s/n 498 on r.i.a Dec. 6th. Auction.

Pictures will turn out best when taken outdoors in natural light, flash turned off, and a neutral color background.
I have greatly enjoyed all of the research projects that I have created and worked on (and still working on). One of my future articles will be to explore and discuss the 1st variation Model 1894s.

OfflineYes sir. Pictures are definitely better out side. I have taken out side pictures of a few colts. I am planning on a Cody letter a.s.a.p. for the 1886. Also I have learned a lot from you. I am a member now and will definitely enjoy flipping through the magazines. I also have model 1873 s/n says 1885 date of manufacture. I am currently on the hunt for a 94. Must be 38-55 and a first model receiver.

OfflineThank you, I’m sure I will have many questions and it’s really good to know that any answers will be from a trusted and respected source. As far as my 1873 it’s 44-40 born on date 1885, wow talk about character. The old ’73 had a life and the wear to prove it. It’s perfect and I love it just the way it is. Bought it at a garage sale along with a model 1894 marlin in 32-20 manufactured date 1905. ![]()

this is a ’94 I’m interested in.

I have that rifle documented in my research survey. Without the benefit of examining it in person, I did not see anything of concern in the auction pictures.
