Hey guys,
Thanks for accepting me into the group. I come to you all because I have this rifle that has been passed down and passed down forever.
I have no idea what model/year this rifle is. I do know that its heavy and old.
I was hoping that you all could help me figure out more info about my rifle.

That is a 1885 (model) low wall U.S. marked musket. You would need the serial number to determine the year of manufacture. If its a 22 caliber its probably a Winder Musket. Bert would know the most about them.

Hello Kane,
What you have is a Model 87 Winder Musket, and it was originally sold to the U.S. Army for use as a marksmanship training rifle. It was/is chambered for the 22 SHORT rim fire cartridge. The serial number will identify when it was manufactured (the year). The Model 87 was the third and final iteration of the Model 1885 Winder Musket series. Production took place in 1918 – 1920.
It appears to be missing its factory installed Lyman No. 53 rear peep sight.
