Hi all, I’m looking for some opinions. I have a model 94 built in 1941, .25-35 caliber. Bluing is about 85% and a small portion on the buttstock was repaired so its obviously not a high end collector.

I’m considering having the receiver engraved and maybe wood as well. Obviously this would entail a reblue. I’m considering it because I really appreciate the work and additional beauty it adds. I would still shoot it.

From a collectors point of view, am I diminishing the the value, or at this point does it matter?

For the most part, any alteration will diminish the value. Depending on who engraves it, you might recover most of the cost involved in the work.

A butt stock can be replaced very easily and then it would be a great collector piece at 85%. I could see you doing something if the metal had be messed up. I would look for a gun that needs refinishing to start with that has a good stock, swap stocks and engrave it. Now you have a nice original and your fancy refinished one.

Find a lesser quality gun to engrave. You will have to strip and refinish it when complete. Many low condition guns out there. Sell your gun, take profits to pay for the new project. That gun is very collectable at that condition.

If you like that particular gun, and would enjoy owning it after being engraved, get it done. Life is too short to worry about "am I going to get my money out of it". Let the dealers worry about making money on every gun.

Thanks, I’ve decided to keep it as is, although I’d really like to find a replacement butt stock.
