Item #1142 in the upcoming Julia auction (http://jamesdjulia.com/item/1142-358/)
is described as an 1886 22" deluxe short rifle in .45-90 with a nickel finish. Seems interesting to me (but out of my price range) so I ran a Cody search. Here’s what the search yielded verbatim:
Serial number applied on August 7, 1894
Type: Rifle
Caliber: 45/90
Barrel Type: Octagon
Silver Trim
Trigger: Plain
Checkered Stock, Pistol Grip
Sights: Lyman Hunting front & Lyman rear leaf #6
Additional date 12/17/1907
Received in warehouse on August 13, 1894
Shipped from wahrehouse on August 13, 1894, Order number 18115
Repair and Return on April 14, 1896, Order number 9087
Repair and Return on August 21, 1896, Order number 116811
My questions:
1) The Cody search didn’t mention the 22" barrel. Are there any signs the barrel was cut after market based on the auction photos? Possible it was shortened during an R&R but simply not notated as such in the records?
2) The auction description noted a nickel finish. The Cody letter noted a silver trim. Are these different or the same?
3) Any idea what the additional date in 1907 could pertain to?
Always trying to learn about these rifles so your colelctive wisdom is appreciated.

Anything is possible and with the pictures on the auction site you can’t see any detail around the muzzle. Silver plate is different than nickel. Silver will tarnish and wears off quicker. The 1907 date I would guess is another return and repair date but it didn’t actually denote a repair in the ledger. You have a neat gun that probable was changed at the factory but does not letter and the bidding should reflect that.
