As some of you may have seen in the classifieds I am going to look at some cool guns soon. My buddy just picked up a collection of 15 guns. Of the ones I am interested in there is a 76 deluxe, 86 in 40-82 and a mint 73. I got the info on the 76 and 86 today. The 86 has been rated at 95%+ by my friend(he’s looked at thousands of original Winchesters and Colts) and the 76 is at 75%. Just wanted to share because I thought it was cool.

Mike,
They sound real unique and understand why your trying to come up with some cash. Those kind of guns don’t come up for sale to often.

Mike,
Make sure you get some pictures of them. They would definitely be something to look at. I wonder if that 1906 R&R would affect the barrel stamping so far as the proof mark. All and all they sound like very interesting and rare rifles. 8) Please post some pictures if you can.

I just went to look at the guns….man I wish I had an extra 110k layin around! The 1876 Deluxe is factory engraved on the lever and forend, matted barrel, 1/2 mag and about 50%+ case colors still there. Gun ovrral is still 70% or better. Problem is that he wants 40k! I took a few pics withthe phone that I’ll post shortly. The Henry was 40k also. The 86….all I can say is WOW! Its goin home with papa and I’m gonna have to make room by selling a few others. 😀
I live with the philosophy that you should always try to talk yourself out of a gun and not talk yourself into it. That being said I left the store twice today came back and did a thorough inspection of the 86 including removing the buttplate to look for any type of refinish and I’m 100 percent certain it is a completely original 99 percent Winchester 1886 it is the closest a new I have ever seen on ANY " antique" Winchester.
Sorry it took so long and I know these are crappy hotel pics but here they are. This gun was made in 1888. Extra Heavy Weight, 40-82, set trigger…. beautiful! BTW, anyone know where the brass tag is from?

I remember a few years ago C.W. Slagle had a 76 very similar to the one you are looking at. He had it for sale with a couple of other guns that came out of a small museum in Montreal. The condition was unbelievable, I had a chance to handle these guns before the owner in Canada had sold them. All the guns had brass tags like yours and related to inventory #s. The 76 was advertised at around $60K and know it sold. These guns before ending up in the Museum had been sent by Winchester to a Canadian Ammunition Manufacture for testing of cartridges. Guns like what you have found don’t usually find themselves in a gun shop but at Auctions. At least at a gun shop you are not bidding on them, walk in, lay your money down and go home with a smile. Hope you are able to swing the other 2 into your collection.
I can see why you were so excited by that ’86. A fellow seldom if ever comes across something like that. Those other two are wonderful as well. The temptation to drop large rolls of cash would be almost overwhelming. You did well in escaping out of there having only bought one!
I finally got home and got some better outdoor pictures. The hotel room wasn’t very friendly and one person brought up the fact that they thought the muzzle was blued. Well as you can see from the better pics, it has a muzzle in the white. I know the gun looks to good to be legit but I’ve gone all the way to running a digital bore scope through the action and down the bore. This thing is a beauty!

I agree. The only real wear is the top layer of oil on the case under the receiver, top tang, forend cap a little and buttplate. I have never been able to find one with enough original finish so that it had that top layer of oil on the case colors sorta. I’ve looked hard and can find no primer ring on the bolt face.
I was looking at the finish on the gun and it looks like it has a coat of lacquer or something over the CC. I thought it was a hardened layer of oil or something but I guess not. The wear I was talking about is just some loss of this layer in some areas. Did Winchester cover the case colors like this?
You can see it at the tip of the heel here. http://s389.photobucket.com/user/6101975/media/1886/_DSC0263_zpsdc619222.jpg.html
and here on the forend cap.

Mike,
Yes they did, so you don’t want to use anything aggressive when wiping the gun. It keeps the colors from fading.
