Well I finally got an 1892 in 44-40. It wasn’t the deluxe, takedown, ….I was looking for but still a very honest 44-40 that didn’t cost me a ton of money. The guy also had a 4 digit 1894 in 38-55 so I traded him my 2nd gen. SAA and a couple hundred for both guns. I think I did great. This is the only 38-55 I have so I’ll hold it till a nicer one comes along. Very solid gun with a lot of honest wear. Bore has good rifling but needs a good shooting to clean it out.The plug screw in the tang is missing so I’m trying to find one that looks its age and not a new one. The 1892 is a 1917 gun(830380). The 94 is 8230. BTW, do any of you guys know what model the tang sight is on the 92? All it has on it is Pat Jan 20/79, or at least thats whatit looks like. Thanks.

Nice rifles!

The tang sight on the 1892 is a Lyman No. 1. The No 1 had the flip down aperture, the No 2 a removable disc aperture. They were denoted with an A (Example Lyman No 1A) if it had the locking lever on the left side to keep it upright, this does not. With that long stem, sure looks like one for an 1886 though. The tang sights for the 1892 / 1894 had a shorter stem. If you gently remove the tang screws and check the underside of the base, there should be a code there which will give you a better idea. If it is for an 1886, it will be coded N or NI. A Lyman 1892 base should be coded D. If it is for the 1886, it may not be right for the gun, but they are worth considerably more than the others.

I pulled it off. It has an N under it. I’m gonna take it off. THis leads me to another question. Anybody got a standard set of tang screws with age on them for this gun? I also need just the upper screw(plug) for the 1894. The other guy dropped it when he was tryin to swap around sights and couldn’t find it.

Hello Mike

Could I ask that you please send me photos of all the stamped writing on the rifle and the full serial number so that I can enter your rifle intoy survey of the 1892’s? [email protected]

Thanks so much for the help and congrats on the two nice rifles.

Very nice acquisition. Any M1892 in 44 WCF in nice shape is a collectors prize, and a 4 digit M1894??? Wow !!! You did well. All the nice oct. bbl. M92 rifles in 44 WCF at the last Reno show were all priced well over $4,000. The carbines, much higher. I love the M1892’s and have found, in the past couple years, the standard M1892 with the oct. bbl. and in collectable condition, nice blue and #10 bore, very, very, hard to find at any price. I just about gave up trying to find a decent rifle. Some were as high as $10,000. Surfing Gun Broker in 2010, I found what I was looking for on a "Buy it now" for $2,500. Almost broke my finger hitting the button. It is one gun I will never part with. Enjoy your new treasures. They are real nice. Big Larry

Hi guys. New to this forum.
Trying to get info on one of my Winchesters.
It is an 1892 carbine in 44-40, manufactured 1915. It has a stamping on the barrel – crossed flags with a crown on top, D on left, C on right and P on bottom.
The story I got with the rifle is that this is a Canadian inspection or proof mark and that they were purchased by or on behalf of the Royal Navy for boarding purposes. Any ideas please? Ross.

Ross:

9,000 Winchester Model 1892, 44-40 cal. carbines were initially purchased. Most went to the Royal Navy on 24 Feb, 1915. Three Canadian inspectors were sent to the New Haven factory. They completed inspections by 25 March, 1915. They proofed another 3,000 model 1892 Royal Navy Carbines in 15 August 1915 in both cases Canadian proof marks, the Tudor Crown over crossed flags, were used on carbines that passed proof.

I have a Canadian collector who is looking for one of these to purchase. If you are interested in selling it, please let me know: [email protected]

Do you know of any book or publication that may contain this information?
It is not for sale at this time.
Regards, Ross.
