Why do some model 61’s have screws in the rear tang and some do not? Terry

Terry,

The pre-WW II rifles were made with the screw holes so that a tang sight could be mounted. Winchester eliminated that option in the post war years as a cost saving step.

Hello Terry,

I am conducting a survey of the Model 61 and am tracking the point at which the tang is D&T for a peep sight or not. If you have a Model 61 rifle I would love to add it into my work. I am also tabulating the barrel shape, chamber designation, and butt plate style.

The transition point for the tang change is in the 63,000 to 67,000 range.

Thanks so much for any help
Michael

Don’t have one yet, Are the early one’s with the tang screws worth more than the later ones? Terry

I would say yes, they are worth more, because the D&T indicates that it’s a Pre-War example. Basically, any of the models that were manufactured pre and post WW2 will bring a premium if they are the earlier pre-war version. Kind of like antique or not.
