This is a very basic question but since I don’t collect .22s I can’t answer a question submitted to the Exec. Secty.

Was the Model 1906 offered with a tang sight? Reading the catalog, it gives the impression that only front and rear barrel sights were available. Are the upper tangs drilled and tapped for an after market sight installation?

Thanks………..

Rick,

The Model 1906 was drilled & tapped for a tang sight just like the Model 1890. a Lyman No. 1A tang sight could have been special ordered, but was undoubtedly quite rare.

Question for Burt,
I got off of the topic a bit in the 94 short rifle thread, and began discussing my Model 1906 S/N#379879 Serial number applied May 21,1913.
Question is what year did WRA drop the 1906 to 06 for this rifle. and is the model designation for this model only on the barrel and not the tang.
My rifle is model 06 marked on the barrel and has the Winchester trademark logo on the tang with no model mentioned. My 1904 vintage Model 1890 WRF has it all on the tang just like the 1892-95s , were 1906 rifles marked different? The years 1919 and 1920 were given for the time frame WRA dropped the 1900 and 1800 designations.

Thanks Dan

Dan:

Winchester changed the designation from "Model 1894" to "Model 94" very shortly after a "Change in Manufacture Order" was issued by Frank F. Burton on February 2nd, 1919 at around serial number no. 882,000.

I’m quite sure that the memo applied to all models.

Hope that helps……………..

Thanks Rick, I was afraid Bert wouldn’t answer because I spelled his name wrong. But I have always been curious of the change in model designations.

People misspell my name all the time… after more than 50-years, I am used to it.

As Rick mentioned, Frank F. Burton’s Change of Manufacture Notice applied to all models in production at that time. For some models, it took several months before the change was full implemented.

The Model 1906 never had the model designation on the upper tang. It was always on the barrel only.

There were a very few early second models with the tang inscribed with the Model 1906 designation. I have #16340 with that marking.

I stand corrected! Instead of trusting my memory, I should have looked at my copy of Ned Schwing’s fine book Embarassed

Apparently there were two different tang markings in use right from the start of production. Ned states that the 06-A style with the "MODEL 1906" marking is infrequently found in the serial number range 1 – 76000. The more common upper tang marking in the same serial number range simply has two line "WINCEHSTER" and "TRADE MARK".

Ned goes on to say "The 06-A tang marking is not often encountered because the model desigantion "MODEL 1906" appeared on the barrel address as well."
