I just acquired an 1894 in 25-35 with a Lyman #56 peep sight. My question is the result of a discussion among gun show friends that say there should be a corresponding front sight with the #56 other than the standard dovetail one. I left confused?? Will the usual 1894 front sight work or should I be on the lookout for its mate.
The first thing you should understand, is that a Lyman No. 56 is not a factory original sight on a Winchester Model 1894. Consequently, there is no "correct" front sight to go with it.
When the Lyman No. 56 was first used by Winchester (on the Model 64 and Model 71), it was paired with the standard front sights in use at that time. Both the Model 64 and 71 used the No. 31 bead front sight with a sight hood.
