I was trolling around the Internet looking at various Model 94s and came across a deluxe 94 rifle with a 24" barrel. A Cody search confirms the length along with extra light option and other features. In my limited time collecting/observing Winchesters, I’ve seen both 22" and 24" bbls on "short" rifles. Of the rifles that do letter, does anybody (i.e., Bert) have the population ratios of 22" and 24" bbls that informs us just how rare they are?

Thanks – Greg

Somewhere here one the WACA forums I posted a chart copied from the survey conducted by the CFM and published in the ARMAX Vol V., but I am having difficulty locating it. The survey covers serial numbers 1 -353,999.

20-inch – 2,980
22-inch – 2,252
24-inch – 1,661

There are another 100+ rifles in various other "short" lengths.

I suspect that the actual "short" barrel Rifle production numbers for serial numbers through the end of 1937 (1 – 1158835) are roughly triple those in the ARMAX survey.

Wow I had no idea there were so many more Rifles then Carbines. Seams around here you see carbines 10-1 compared to rifles.

Thanks for the chart Bert.

Based on the ARMAX survey, and my own research survey of the serial numbers in the 354000 – 1000000 range, my estimate is that the "Rifles" out numbered the "Carbines" by a 3:2 ratio through the first 1,000,000 Model 1894s manufactured. After serial number 1000000 (in the year 1927), the Carbines vastly out number the Rifles through serial number 1158835 (the end of 1937) when Winchester discontinued the Model 94 Sporting Rifle.

Hey Bert . Wouldn’t you agree that carbines are in greater numbers from 800,000 up to the war? Of course after the war , carbines are pretty much it.

Yes, but not by a big margin. In my of survey of the Type 4 and Type 5 upper tang markings (spanning serial numbers 800,000 to 1,000,000), I have (56) Rifles, and (81) Carbines listed. From all appearances, Model 94 Sporting Rifles were very common through serial number 1,000,000.
