I have inherited this old Winchester 1892 from my late uncle. I need some help with identifying it. at first, it appears to be your run-of-the-mill win 1892. but notice the magazine tube that DOES not extend past the forearm. I have searched online and cannot find what this one is. I will try to get better pics later but for now, this is all I have. If it helps, the SN is 206XXX and according to the results, it was made in 1902.

can anyone tell me what ‘model’ of Winchester this is? I’m at a loss…

With a partial serial number, it can be narrowed down to Oct. or Nov. of 1902. It appears to be just an 1892 with a half magazine, ( sometimes refered to as a button mag ).
I am sure others more familiar with the 92 will chime in later.

Paul

Take a look at thess two.

Thanks 94 shorties!! That rifle in that link is exactly like mine! I’d never heard of a "button magazine" but then again, I’m nowhere near the expert in this particular case.

Now, where can one find parts for these? this one I have is missing the magazine spring and follower (32-20 WCF). I know this may sound blasphemous, but I want to put this back into operation. It does fire but obviously without the magazine parts, it wont cycle.

thanks

Hello,

Yes your rifle is a Model 1892 sporting rifle configuration with a half magazine. It was indeed manufactured during 1902Approximately 10% of the total production was produced with these shorter magazines. As long as there is not an empty dovetail cut in the bottom of the barrel about 4 inches from the muzzle and the end of the magazine is rounded, not flat, then the rifle is original. Can you use the reference material in this link to tell me which barrel address, and tang stamp are on the rifle. Could I also get the full serial number of the rifle? http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

You can find parts here:
http://homesteadfirearms.com/parts/shopcart/commerce.cgi?product=Winchester_1892&cart_id=1243614860.108

I look forward to more photos.

twobit – check your personal email – I have uploaded pics to my personal website and sent you the link – let me know if there are any other pics from this gun that you need. I think I found all the marks and identification on it that you needed (as per your gunbroker instructions)….Jrz_dad

jrz,

Thanks for the images and you did a fine job. The rifle is all correct for its serial number range. The Type 2 barrel address on your rifle had just begun to be used in 1902 around SN 200,000. The barrel on your rifle is pretty beat up for some reason.

Thanks again for your help!!
