How many different thumbprint patterns were made for the first model 1873’s? I seem to remember reading someplace that there were up to 6? different patterns.
I am aware of, and have read the thread here concerning the raised thumbprint covers, but I am looking for information on the rest of the first model production run.
I have a first model serial #18118 with a rectangular patterned thumbprint that looks like the repro ones. The patina matches the rest of the gun, but I’m just trying to determine if it is original, or if someone did a good job of matching the finish with a replacement
Is there any other way to tell if it is original?
Hello,
According to Jim Gordon there were 5 distinct dust cover styles used on the Model 1873 rifles. But, none of them have a rectangular shaped "thumbprint" area. Please post a photos of the one on your rifle and we can be more definitive.

There never was a square thumbprint by Winchester. The only ones I see that are not round or oval are repos. Repos are not checkered, they are just serrated. This is a repo.
