Hi everybody,
I’m trying to get information on the number of verifiable factory engraved Winchester model 1890’s Winchester produced. Has anybody done any research on this subject at all? I would be very interested in knowing the approximate rarity or scarcity of them. Thanks for any assistance!
Hello,
You will want to find a copy of Ned Schwing’s book on slide action .22 rifles Vol 1. In it he addresses this on pages 178 to 181. Factory ledgers exist for the first 329,999 Model 1890 rifles that were manufactured. Of these 69 were factory engraved. Of these, only 36 were engraved with factory patterns, the rest with the owners name. They area extremely rare, and potentially valuable.

Hi,
I do have one of the 36 factory pattern engraved Winchester 1890’s. Actually the pattern is much more suited to a 92 or 94 because it’s a deer within a circle and scroll work on the other side. It’s in about 98% with bright nickle trims and checkered straight rear stock that has an inlay in the heel with initials. Any idea of the value? I have been looking for years but never did see another like the one I have.
Thanks,
Len

Len, it sounds as if you might own a very valuable 1890. I’ll try to take a picture of an example in Schwing’s book and post it here if you’d like me to. I’d also like for you to post up a picture of each side of it here for many of us to admire, if you would.

James,
I don’t have Schwings book but I’d sure like to see any examples of engraved 1890’s. I do have the 1st addition of Wilson’s book of Winchester engraving and that’s why I said the engraving is more suited to a 94 or 92. I can probably send you a PM picture if you can post pictures. I don’t have the privilege to post.
