Any thoughts on this fine looking ’86. Was the barrel shortened or a ledger typo? The rest of it looks to be original. Great looking rifle either way.

I am taking a break from doing a little geology work and looked at this gun. Does the magazine retaining band look as if it is too far from the muzzle. If it had been an original 36 inch barrel would cutting 10 inches off of it leave the rear magazine band in this position relative to the muzzle of the rifle? I have no Winchester reference material in my office (so I won’t get distracted like this).

Its a cut barrel.

James,
Like Michael eluded to , the barrel band is set back slightly from its normal position. If you take a 36" and cut it to 26" the first barrel band would be in that spot.

That’s what I thought that you and Michael were working on, Bob, but at this point in time I tend to agree with Bert in that it’s a "typo" on the letter. Notice, too, that the seller has over 3000 sales with not one negative feedback! That’s a phenomenal record to say the least. The winner will have the opportunity to return the piece with no questions asked should the measurements or anything else not be right. However, you could be right.

James,
You have to remember some people will pay more for the gun if it was a real 36" gun rather than a 26" even with it being cut. The measurement from the muzzle to the center of the barrel band is 4.937".

Bob,
Barrel length aside, how do you get the 4.937" measurement?

Sure couldn’t have been many 36" barreled guns…in that caliber besides. Wow.
