I have a 94 takedown in .25-35. It has a 20″ octagon barrel and I was told it’s a short rifle. How can I track it to know if it has been altered? I can’t see anything that would lead me to believe it has been.

Is the serial number < 354000 ? If it is, you can have it lettered through the Cody Firearms Museum records office. The factory letter would confirm if the 20-inch length is factory original.

If the serial number is > 353999, I will need to examine the barrel assembly to determine if it is factory original, or if it was cut down after the fact. If you can provide clear detailed pictures of the last 6-inches of the barrel, to include the muzzle face, the bottom of the barrel (with the magazine tube removed), the exact position of the front sight dovetail cut, and the magazine tube retaining ring position relative to the muzzle face, I can more than likely determine if it is original or cut down.
