I have a friend with an ’86 Winchester and single set trigger which are not working. Do any of you know of a tutorial or drawing that would explain the single set trigger so that we may get this thing working or do you know of a good gunsmith that understands a single set trigger on the ’86. Thanks.

Have you tried adjusting the screw?

Drawings of the mechanism can be found in several books, such as Campbell’s SS Vol. l, but by far the clearest & most detailed I’ve seen appears in Frank DeHass’ SS Rifles–once a common gunshow book, but now, unfortunately, expensive because it’s long OP. He explains how it (and the other Winchester set triggers) works, & provides photos of the parts along with the drawing. In fact, he wrote a separate book devoted entirely to set triggers, but it’s now even more expensive.

Yes. Bizarre that it hasn’t been reprinted when demand has pushed it to around $100. Few yrs ago, DeHaas’ son was saying he was going to do so, but it never happened.
Clarence what does the book cover look like? There are several single shot books by him? I would like the one with the best detail about how the triggers actually work or could be repaired.

It’s this one: https://www.abebooks.com/book-search/title/single-shot/author/frank-de-haas/
And that’s the cheapest price I’ve seen in a long time!

Clarence, there are 24 books on this page? Look at the other book on ebay. Second line second photo. I believe that this one is from 1969 and the other one, 1st line 1st photo, is newer?

Sorry, not the page I thought I had copied!
However, when I tried to find the listing for that particular copy again, it had disappeared! Don’t know what to think but that somebody bought it.
Here’s another page, on which the cheapest copy now listed in $69, the 2nd listing on this page.
Yes, it’s ’69. Scroll further down & others are listed at higher prices.
Forget the above, I just found a BIN copy on ebay that’s even cheaper than the first one I found–$38 !

Scuffed up it appears, but won’t last long at that price.
The book you guys are referring to has the set trigger diagrams for the 1885 high wall. I was asking for the 1886 lever action. It’s a much different trigger system and more difficult to work on. I haven’t seen any aftermarket 1886 trigger parts for sale although Homestead Firearms parts may have them but they want to do the work on the rifle.

Thanks Clarence. I still think there are 2 versions of this book. I am going to buy one of them.
Get that one on ebay, if it’s still there! I’d buy it myself if I didn’t have 2 copies, inc. the very rare hardbound ed.
There’s a smaller supplement to the original ’69 ed. (titled “MORE…), but not 2 versions of the original; de Haas was too busy writing new books, inc. one of the best on bolt-actions ever written.

I have never worked on a set trigger. I was hoping that there would be enough similarities from one model to the next to at least figure things out. I know Winchester made at least 3 different styles of set triggers. Single set, double set and close set. I have a single set and a close set on 1885s. I also copied what Bob posted.

Here a link to a old post were I put up a article with picturesBob
Bob I know that Jim has retired. I was party to a conversation where another dealer bought out his entire stock of screws. I have no idea about any other parts he may have had? Jim said he was already out of 73 and 76 screws.
