Hello all,
Here is an interesting example of a significant time period between when a Model 1892 receiver was serialized until it was actually used to make up a functioning rifle. In this case it was almost a full 6 years. The rifle is a 26 inch OB, with double set triggers, a shotgun butt, and serial number 291596. SNA is September 2,1903. Definitely a special order gun. The tang stamp is correct for the serialization date.
It was listed in the Amoskeag Auction this past November as Lot #315 and sold for $4000. It was just listed on Guns International and the images included a Cody data sheet from the ledgers showing it to have been received in the warehouse on January 8. 1909 and shipped the same day. Since it was assembled in 1909 the occurrence of the proof stamps on the rifle is correct as that began in 1905. At first glance one might think the barrel is not original. But it certainly is.
