With the proper loads, 4198 creates slightly less pressure than the original 2F black powder factory loads. The starting load for the 45-90 WCF with a 300-gr bullet is 34-grains of IMR 4198, and no filler is required or needed. Work your load up slowly until you get to 1450 – 1500 fps.

Interesting. Published data shows starting load of 38grs and a max of 40grs. I guess that’s a good thing with 4198, it’s forgiving.

What published source are you referring to? My load reference sources are certainly different than yours. That stated, Yes, 4198 is quite forgiving, especially with lighter loads.
