I have a full box of clean Remington 44-40 High Speed ammo. 160 grain Mushroom bullet. Does anyone have an idea what this is worth?

Tough question I guess. Thought someone into Winchesters may have sold some of these or saw some for sale..

I would be more inclined to believe that most of us simply do not collect [color=green:68ee4ce3f6]Remington[/color:68ee4ce3f6] ammo. 😯

I wonder if people 100 years ago only bought and shot Winchester ammo in their Winchesters.

I do buy the stuff in the green and yellow boxes to shoot if I can get it cheap.

My guess is this High Velocity 160gr. Mushroom ammo is quite rare. I can not find any reference to it anywhere on the internet.

That was the goal of both Remington and Winchester, to get the public to only shoot their ammo in their guns. Lots of effort and money was expended on marketing to convince the public that is what they should do, even to the point of developing rifle/cartridge combos that were unique so that the purchaser had to use the original ammo (for awhile at least). .22 Win Auto and .22 Rem Auto are god examples of that.

As a Winchester collector I have no interest in Remington ammo and no clue on pricing, it is just not my thing. You might try the Remington Forum, they will probably give you a better answer.

You are right, there is brand loyalty today and I am sure there was 100 years ago.

I think that certain Remington boxes are very collectible. It depends on which box and condition and rarity I guess. I like the early dogbone boxes. There are also some specific loadings that are desirable. The Remington Express box with the train is a neat one. Peters is another brand that made some very nice two piece boxes.

I’m pretty sure Remington loaded rimmed cartridges for quite a few other brands of rifles back in the day, just like Winchester sold .303 Savage and Savage sold 32WS and I can’t think of a Savage chambered in 32WS or a Winchester chambered in .303 Savage right off the top of my head. I’m sure they were all trying to get there piece of the market where they could find one.

I collect a lot of 44-40 and 44 henry. It will not bring nearly what a wraco box will bring, but they are somewhat collectible in the own crowd. Remington collectors don’t really chase 44 boxes. Only an ammo box collector would probably want it other than a guy with a single action 44 Remington. But again, not big money like a wraco box. Based on the actual rounds in the case and the box condition, I could determine a value, but I would have to see pics of the contents and the box. Could be $50 could be $400.
