My friend just showed me a gun he recently bought. 1894 SRC 38-55, #1448. How many true first year, 1894, SRCs were there?

Is it a 1st variation?

Thus far, I have verified (15) SRC’s made in 1894 (pre serial number 1675), and I suspect there are at least a few dozen more. Serial number 1448 would be the 16th if it checks out correctly.

Not a first variation.  So the vast majority were rifles?

Yes, the majority of the early production Model 1894s were rifles.  Per the information I received from the CFM records office (Jesi) in my research of the 1st variations, the following statistics apply for the first 7,999 Model 1894s manufactured;

Variations Qty Made % of Total
Rifles 7,457 93.22%
Carbines 503 6.29%
Blank entry 39 0.49%
Total 7,999 100.00%

Well, from a newbie collector to the civilian, guns that won the west, I gotta say. Holy crap there is a lot going on.

I wound up going with a pre 1920 (1908), model 1894, full size barrel and magazine, with 80% bluing, and strong rifling, half octogon half round barrel, and ivory bead front sight.

There is a lot more I wanted, so I’ve definitely got this bug, but this was the best value going for an entry collector rifle for the $2500 range.
