My grandson has s/n 177431, a 1949 model 70 in 30-06 with the very same marking, page 158 photograph 6-23 Roger Rules book.
Don’t know how rare it is but last Saturday he shot a 13 point buck with it on Bob and my farm. Maybe I can get Bob to post the picture. T/R
Is his the 30-06 SPRG.- stamp or the .30 Gov’t’ 06- stamp? Regardless congratulations on that buck! My friends son used mine few years ago to bag a buck and a doe the same day so I’m trying you convince him to trade in his rem 700 on a model 70!

OfflineHi B Hank-
What’s the serial number on your rifle?
The barrel marking is what Rule called “Style 3B”… The barrel address roll mark and the caliber mark were both made by roll dies, just separate roll dies. Prior to that, the (Style 3A) caliber stamp was a separate die stamp, and after that the dies were “one piece” (Style 3C) that included barrel address and caliber in a single roll die.
Style 3B is the most common 30-06 barrel marking between about s/n 100,000 and 150,000. The only other common Style 3B caliber stamp was the “300 SAVAGE –”, but in 30-06 it’s what you expect to see within a certain serial number range…
Here’s an example…
Hope this helps,
Lou
