I’ve been trying to locate the mainspring for a type 1 1895 slabside for over 2 years…. I keep checking with Homestead, and other sites, as well as ebay, gunbroker, etc…
I am hoping someone has one…
Anyone ever made one? I am sure they could be fabricated too….just gettting the right temper and “spring” would be the challenge.
thanks, dave

no help here?? I guess they are scarce as hen’s teeth…dave
Dave,
They are scarce. We would have responded if there was a ready source.
Making one is an option, the modulus of flat spring steel is consistent at 207 GNm-2 and the spring rate can easily be achieved by simply copying the exact dimensions of the original spring (width, thickness, taper, etc.). Use spring steel (carbon steel), then harden, polish and draw the steel temper to a “straw” color (about 425f) then quench in oil. That will get you pretty close to the original spring rate. A good gunsmith could knock one out in about 1.5-2 hours and likely charge you about $100.
Is that the info you were looking for?
