1894 Winchester .30-30 LA manufactured 1899

1894 Winchester .30-30 LA

Hi everyone

I am from New Zealand and last week purchased this firearm. Has a 26″ octagonal barrel. In very good order considering it’s age (my research says 1899), but will send it to a gunsmith to fully check over before firing. The serial no. is 160582, would anyone have access to it’s exact manufacture date or any other info? Thank you.

Hello Jeremy,

Winchester Model 1894 s/n 160582 was actually manufactured October 27th, 1902 per the original factory records.

The 26-inch octagon barrel tells us that it is a Sporting Rifle.  Pictures of the rifle will provide additional details.

The pictures show a standard Model Sporting Rifle in hard worn condition.  At some time in its past, somebody drilled & tapped two extra holes in the left side of the receiver frame for a peep sight. As long as it has a decent bore, and no mechanical issues, it should make a decent “shooter” rifle.

Thanks Bert, that is all really interesting. Yes, the bore is in good condition and I cannot detect any mechanical issues. Nonetheless, I am sending it to a well regarded gunsmith for checking out and refurbishment.

All the best

Good luck with your gun!
Refurbishment? I’d just wipe it down

Good advice Bert. The gunsmith is very experienced, and has a passion for old firearms. He will be mindful ensuring safety and retaining authenticity. Winchester rifles deserve that respect.
