I have a Winchester 1894 made in 1910. It has an 18″ barrel, 8 3/8 forestock, 4″ from the front of receiver to center of the rear sight dovetail. The only odd measurement I come up with is that it is 3/4″ from muzzle to center of the front sight dovetail.
Was there a chance it could have been ordered that way? If it has been cut someone did a heck of a job because there is NO evidence of it being cut.
2nd question, Was the end of the barrel blued on a short rifle when new?
Any info would be appreciated.
The muzzle may have been cold blued if it is indeed blue. About the muzzle distance being too short, only really high definition pictures showing the details of the dovetail cut and the muzzle itself will determine originality. Since no letter is available factory workmanship is all we have to go on.
Sean, the 3/4″ from muzzle to center of front sight seems a little short but not that far off. I have a table of short rifle measurements I could send you if you will give me an email address. pdog72 has been documenting short rifles so he will probably chime in later.

Sean,
It sounds like it started out as a short rifle based on your fore-end and rear sight positions, but I wonder if it was cut even shorter due to muzzle damage or some other reason. Is the barrel round, or octagon? Is the muzzle crowned, or flat? Does the 18″ include the portion of the barrel screwed into the receiver? Also, a good muzzle diameter measurement with a caliper might be quite telling.

Sorry been away for a it but to answer the questions.
18″ includes what is in the receiver, Barrel is round, Muzzle and is .610-.615, other end is 875-880 I have 2 sets of calipers and as you can see they are pretty consistent at 5 thousands apart. By the way there is a slight chamfer where the bullet would come out. Muzzle is not blued
