Hi all,
I am new here, glad to be here as well, but not new to Winchesters. I am though very limited in knowledge on all the varieties and upgrades. I am hoping to learn more from the experts here.
in short, an elderly family member has this 1894. (Not for sale). As mentioned, I am weak on upgrades.. so asking here.. The data I have includes:
– 30 WCF (30-30)
– 3 leaf rear site.
– 160xxx SN. – I believe 1902 based on the serial number look up.
– 22” barrel half round, half octagon
– Takedown
– Assuming factory installed Lyman sites.
– Appears to be all original.
Looking forward to learning more. I just ordered a letter for it.

Hello Dell,
Very nice !! 
The CFM factory letter will tell you that it is an Extra Lightweight Rifle, and that it was manufactured in October 1902. Based on the original Winchester catalogs, it is a Fancy Sporting Extra Lightweight rifle. Based on your photos, it appears to be factory original and in very nice condition. When you receive the CFM factory letter, please get back to us with what information it contains.

Glad you dropped in, Dell. As the AMEX commercial used to say; “membership has its benefits”. As a CFM member I have a number of searches and letters available at no extra charge. As. WACA member I get additional searches, a wonderful calendar and four great magazines every year. Members can also post pics directly to the site and we LOVE pictures. I think you belong here, I’m looking forward the reading about (and seeing) your Winchesters. And yes, that is one sweet 1894!

Welcome Dell; That is one beautiful 1894, I sold one identical , (except a tang site instead of the receiver site), ser#244xxx , in similar high condition a couple of Years ago, wish I hadn’t. They are very difficult to find like that and very expensive.

I wished I’d found something in the buttstock of this 1894 when I bought it, like the original pull thru , but alas it was empty.

That is a thin octagon barrel!

Yes Steve and it is also a “matted” thin barrel. different gun than the trap door butt gun though

I remember this thread now back in 2024. No mention of the Lyman 21 receiver sight in the letter but still a very nice rifle. I’m not sure if the repair and return could be related to the addition of the receiver sight? You might want to double check with Cody on the features. Thanks for remembering us.

As others have said, it’s a very nice rifle with an exceptional and well liked configuration. We appreciate you returning and sharing with us, as members have said it’s truly a prize!
Any time one like this is seen at a gun show or even at Auction, many might suggest or assume it was sent back and the receiver sight was added then.
These are getting harder to come by and sought after and many of us would be proud to own it!

agreed and thanks for your thought. I did check back with Cody, but the only feedback I got was the shared all the data they had already. Maybe they didn’t wanna go back and check or maybe they don’t have the data. Not sure

Dell, it’s not often they make a mistake, but on the rare occasion, something gets missed. If they had the info, Jesi And the crew would definitely advise you. They have nothing to gain, and they are well aware of the importance of the letter information.

I agree, I’ve had quite a few letters I have ordered from Cody and they’ve been pretty much right on the money. It does seem odd though that the letter would miss things like the three leaf Winchester express site… as I think this would be an optional add from the factory. Would you suggest I go back to Cody and ask them to double check?

No, if you already checked with them like you said and they advised they shared all the data, you can pretty much take that to the bank. The original rear sight was most likely switched to a 3 leaf express when the receiver sight was added.
