I have an 1894 in 30WCF that from the info on this site dates to 1908. It has 2 tapped holes on the top of the receiver that a local gun shop said were not original. Inspecting then they look factory to me. Did some rifles come drilled and tapped for adjustable peep sites?

Steven,

Trust your local gun shop… Winchester did not D&T holes on the top of any Model 1894 receiver frame. Can you provide pictures of the holes?

What is the serial number?  With it, I can narrow down the date of manufacture to the exact month & year.

The serial number is 425582. The holes are machined very well and blued on the inside. It also has a Marble rear site. I’ll try to add a pic when I’m on a computer not on my phone

well I figured it out and looking at the pic blown up I can see more. They do look like they were done after manufacture.

Steven,

The date of manufacture for your Model 1894 was late November 1908.

Only one of the holes is not factory original (the middle hole)… the hole drilled through the factory marking is the offender.

The upper tangs were factory drilled and tapped to mount a tang sight, but it was the factory screw holes on each end of the factory roll marking (see the attached pictures) that were used.

OP stated holes were drilled on TOP of the receiver frame, I assume now he meant upper tang?

The extra hole is usually hidden under a tang sight. When buying a Winchester with a tang sight look before you buy. T/R

If the xtra hole offends You, put a Lyman  DA  tang site, on it. It won’t make the gun “right” but it would look better
