I came across a 95% condition 1892 standard rifle with octagon barrel and full magazine in 25-20 WCF that was threaded for a Maxim Silencer.  This one had a screw-on octagon muzzle cap.  It was out of the letterable (900,000) range.  How do you determine if this option factory original or not?  I didn’t have an opportunity to take photos.  I’ve seen a few rifles with barrels threaded for this, but have never seen one with the threaded octagon barrel cap.  It looked like factory quality work, but I don’t know much about these to know for sure.

Are the threads blued?  A picture would help.

Does the octagon screw on cap index perfectly with the barrel?

Yes, once tightened, the cap does index perfectly.

Regards,

I wish I would have looked the threads over better.  I’ll try to get the seller to send some photos–if he hasn’t sold it yet.

As mentioned, the cap should index and the threads should be blued.  Those are not definitive clues but certainly indicators of factory installation.
