Dissasembled my first 1892 and found the lower band screw extremely hard to remove, but with a lot of pressure and hollow point screwdriver, I did it.  Now it won’t go back in.  Appears the screw is very tight against the barrel.  Very wary of filing the grove in the barrel.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Someone will be along to help, but I too would be very wary of filing the groove in the barrel….

Mark,

Its possible someone replaced the screw with the wrong one. Does the screw go into the band  with the barrel band removed. Posting some pictures of the screw and barrel/tube area might help someone spot the issue.

Repaired (my method):

As you suggested, I removed the band and tried the screw.  It would go but very tightly.  It appeared the head of the screw was not seating properly in the band.  I oiled the screw threads and then coated the screw head and the head side of the band with 600 grit silicon carbide abrasive.  I then worked the screw in and out several dozen times until it worked freely.

When placed back on the rifle, it was still very tight.  I repeated the above methodology however placed the abrasive on the shaft of the screw where it was rubbing against the barrel.  Worked the screw about a dozen times and it was free.

I ultrasonically cleaned the screw and band and then applied Black Magic (cold blue) with a Q tip to any shinny spots caused by the abrasive.  Every thing went back together OK.
