I have an 1892 rifle and I am trying to positively date it as an antique, pre-1899. The center serial numbers are worn and unreadable, the first number is clearly a 9 and the last number is a 3. The gun has no proofmarks. Caliber on top of barrel. The tang marking is Model 1892 Pat Oct 14 1884. The barrel marking is just Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms marking, no patent dates.

Is there enough there to identify it as a pre-1899 gun?

I can not tell, but from the features listed it could not be in 900,000 (1920+) range.

Post a picture if you can of the SN.

If the numbers on both ends of the SN are 9 & 3, then you could assume:

If its 993 = 1892

If its 9,993 = 1893

If its 99,993 = 1898

If its 999,993 = 1930

That is, if your trying to determine whether antique or not, but it all depends on how many digit spaces there are.

I thought the features listed would be a clue to the era of manufacture.

Your description of the barrel and patent markings indicates that the serial number is either 4-digits of 5-digits in length, either of which is inside the Antique range. Serial number 103328 was the last “Antique” Model 1892.

Send me some pics of the upper tang and the barrel markings.  There are 3 different parrel address stamps which do not have the patent date included.  They are common within “distinct” serial number ranges.  In addition, the are very minute changes to the Type 1 upper tang stamp which can alsos narrow down the possible range.   [email protected]
