I have a 1892 Sporting Rifle made in 1897 with what appears to be a chrome/nickel plated forearm tip. Did Winchester ever offer this?

Edit, how can I remove the plating so I can blue/brown it. The rifle has been extensively reworked/sanded and is not original by any means. Just trying to make it look more original. All suggestions appreciated.
