Over the years I have collected decent examples of three of the four 92 carbines. The only one I’m missing is a copy of the 38-40. I’ve come close a couple of times, but the ones I were trying for ultimately went for more than I had on hand at the time. I happened to spot this one on Guns International, and it seems to be from a reputable dealer.
The condition of the metal is on the rougher side, but the screws seem decent and it supposedly has a nice bore. Despite the description of the wood being “lightly cleaned” it appears to fit right and the metal does not appear proud of the wood. I notice sling swivels – original equipment, or later add-ons?
I’m thinking about tossing an offer at the seller, but before I do I thought I’d ask here to see if any of you more knowledgeable fellows can spot any red flags I might be missing.

John,The sling studs are positively not factory original. Otherwise, it is a reasonably decent SRC.

Thanks again Bert, having you and the forum in my back pocket makes navigating the Winchester waters a lot more comfortable! I’ll see what kind of deal I can make with the shop.
Hello John,
Leroy bought that SRC from Amoskeag auction in November of 2019 for $850. There ought to be some “wiggle room” for a deal to be made I would think. As Bert mentioned the sling studs are absolutely not original to the gun and the butt plate fits a little weird. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Michael, this is very good information to know so thank you so much for taking the time to post. so with purchase price, auction fees, shipping, excetera, he’s probably in to the gun for around $1,000.
I’m a little put off by the lack of finish on the receiver, but the bore is bright and the wood is in nice condition as are the screws. The sling studs don’t bother me too much i sort of wish they weren’t there. Any opinions on what a fair price to offer would be? The guy’s got to eat so I don’t mind him making a profit. 🙂
Again, very valuable information From this form once again. I love this place and thanks!!
After a very courteous, simple, short, and straightforward negotiation, I did end up with the carbine in my lap. It actually looks better than the pictures, and the bore is minty bright. While the sling swivels are odd and out of place, judging by their patina they have been on this gun for a very long time.
I’m pleased with the carbine, and as soon as it quits raining and I can get up to the BLM land behind my house, I’m gonna take it for a spin.
