I have a 1894 receiver (made in the early 70’s) I picked up a few years back at a gun show with 44 mag barrel. I have since then traded away the 44 mag barrel and have screwed on a 32 Winchester special barrel but haven’t properly fitted it yet. (the 30-30 style parts are much easier to find)
Just today I came across a damaged 1892 (pre 64 model I think, been polished several times hard to see the serial number to verify) the rear top tang is broken and missing. The local gunsmith I got it from use to own it years ago and a local he sold it too broke it. I currently don’t have the broken off tang (some of the internal parts are missing as well) and not sure if the other guy still has it but checking into that and the other missing parts to see if it can be reassembled.
On the 1892 the 26 inch octagon barrel is in 38 WCF, forearm, ft sight and magazine is still there and intact.
Would this fit a 1894 (post 64) receiver? Just slowly putting the 94 back together for a shooter and keeping my options open in case the other parts of the 92 are now lost to the winds.
I have always liked these rifles and currently have a 32-20 1892 made in 1901, Rossi version ranch hand and 16 inch carbine and three Winchester 30-30 rifles. I look forward to getting more in the future.
The post 94 action was just about bare, It was mainly just the receiver, barrel and a few screws. The expense of the 44 mag parts if you could find them was the reason for doing the swap. 30 30 parts were common and can be found. I ran across the 32 Winchester special barrel and tried it since it is just a necked up 30 30 round. I may be better off just finding a post 94 in 30 30. I have seen some with cut frames under 300 dollars complete. Use to be a lot of loose parts at my local gun shows but haven’t seen much lately in just parts.
If the barrel threading is the same I may try it. Still no word on the missing 92 parts so far. Looking at it more today looks like someone tried welding it already, no telling what kind of metal they tried to use. Thinking that is why the action was polished on the outside. To cover up the welding.
I was hoping the head spacing was a lot closer than it was on the 94 to the 32 wcs barrel. It’s just about half a barrel worth off when you get it hand tight. Don’t think putting it in the vice with a barrel wrench would get it the rest of the way with out maching the barrel face some more.
