This 1892 short rifle, OB, 44-40, has the British proof standing lion, circa 1856, London proof house.
Mfg. 1913. Came from a collection in Great Britain or France.
Mark behind lower tang on stock has an " R " stamped into it.
Any way to research the combined lion and R on the rifle to get to it’s origin after leaving factory and any provenance ?
Serial search only says serial applied July 3, 1913
Bert,
I was thinking since the British Empire covered 1/5 of the world land area about then, and things were uneasy in Western Europe before Germany’s invasion of Belgium in 1914, they may have concluded they needed a few more Winchesters to protect what they had.
That may be an interesting story to some.
Bill
