I picked up this gun today. Serial # 834737. It’s all original with about 50% finish remaining. Does anyone know production numbers and rarity for stainless steel barrels. It’s a 22 short.

Mike,

The serial number makes it a July 1930 production Model 90, and in the correct time window for a factory installed stainless steel barrel. I do not know how many were made, but I have seen several of them.

Larry,

I would not put any credence in that… To the best of my knowledge, Winchester made them with stainless barrels in the years 1927 – 1930.

Yep, I agree with Bert. Winchester did promote the stainless barrels and did rebarrel some 1890’s to stainless but if the serial number is in the range Bert mentioned it more than likely was a factory orginal.

If you recall the previous conversation about the oval "P" and and oval "WP" proofs on replacement barrels, those statements usually don’t apply to the stainless barrel replacements. Most of the stainless barrel replacements I have seen only have the "PW" when installed by Winchester. Maybe because they didn’t have a large mail order stock of them? Don’t know exactly why but that is what I have seen.

They offered them on many models at a premium, they didn’t sell well and to close them out offered at standard price. I’ve seen them on 53, 55, 86, 94, the 90 most often. I have a 94carbine 30-30 with one

They were also offered on some other rimfire rifles such as the 52, 56 and 57 as well.

There were a fair number of Model 53, 54, 55, and 94s made with stainless steel barrels, and I have seen at least three Model 97 shotguns with them as well. For the most part, all Winchester models that were in production from late 1926 through 1931 can be found with stainless steel barrels.

I bought one that was on a GB auction about five or six years ago. It’s in the short caliber as well. I try to stay abreast of GB auctions and those held by a couple of the most well known auction houses, and the 1890’s with the stainless steel barrels are very difficult to come by in any condition, and those in nice condition command a considerable premium.

My dad owned one years ago with SS barrel, receiver and trimmings were nickel plated. Had only the WP proof on the barrel and receiver, in 22 LR. Serial number on it was 833600.

A friend of mine has an 1892 38/40 takedown with a SS barrel. His grandfather bought it new and he was lucky enough to inherit it.

Michael,

He sent it to you a couple of months ago, along with a couple of other 1892 family heirlooms. Mark
