I’m not in a financial position to buy this rifle but if I were would it be a decent purchase?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

OfflineVery nice but I’ve been taught to look very critically at a firearm exhibiting different levels of wear. The wood may have a generous coat of Snake Oil but it appears to be in better condition than the metal. The missing sliver of wood is consistent with one unfortunate result of the butt stock being removed. I’m not a buyer either but I suspect they started it a bit high. Maybe it will be listed again.

I agree Mike and I also find the price high. When I see an over inflated price on the first page, I just move on. That goes for his other listings also… imo

OfflineAlso, condition is not as high as initial appearance may dictate. Look at the worn finish of all the sharp edges of the octagon barrel. Not a lightly used gun.
The price on it was optimistic for prior to the Election of 2024, but not drastically so. Winchester 1886s have easily dropped a quarter to a third in value since then, and so it tells you how much (or how little) this rifle is worth in today’s market.

OfflineBased on the fact that the rifle letters 100% as shown in the auction listing, and that it has several very nice special order features (e.g. Checkered Pistol Grip, Set trigger, Sling eyes, and the Lyman sights), I do not believe that the price tag on it is out of the question. I personally really like the configuration of that rifle, the classic rifle (crescent) butt, pistol grip with plain wood and I-pattern checkering, a set trigger, and the Lyman No. 1 tang sight.

A year or so ago, yes. In today’s market I would be a buyer at $7,500 to $8,000.

OfflineI don’t know where I will go with this, but I can’t help myself here. First this rifle has been floating around out there for quite some time. The original price as I remember was up around 15k. This seller at the time also had another listed that was a 45-90 deluxe for around 25k. This rifle is in a nice configuration and it letters as it is. That is a big plus. I am not sure of the wood though. There are a couple pictures that show proud wood, then a couple that look like it has been sanded. One would have to hold it to determine that, ie, is it soft and smooth or does it have a raised grain feel to it. But in todays day and age your not going to find many guns the wood hasn’t seen a bit of care and some oil. I can actually appreciate that in a gun that’s 120 years old. Shows me someone cared about it. The caliber is a is a nice one as I personally like 40-82 , 45-90 is better but that’s just me. I am willing to bet that this gun would sell very quickly for the asking price or more at a well attended auction that had a good write up on it. Personally I don’t mind a blued rifle either. The only thing I would prefer on this would be a half round barrel. I really like that. It balances better and looks darn sexy to boot. Just my thoughts.
PS. aren’t we all looking for the perfect Winchester for next to nothing?

OnlineVermont92 this seller isn’t the only one with high prices. I watched the last few auctions and I don’t mean RIA premier. Prices realized lately are just beyond what I expected or will ever pay, and they’re getting it most times. I’m out of the running for most of the really nice Center fire Winchester guns now. It’s a rich man’s game when it comes to deluxe or guns like this one. Jmo
